House Happenings Fall 2005 HHappeningsHappenings Happenings
Abbeyfield House Parkdale, 425 Parkdale Ave.,
Ottawa ON K1Y 1H3
A good news story for Abbeyfield Parkdale this summer was receiving a grant of $5500 from the Community Foundation of Ottawa to help solve our problem with water seepage through the old foundation. It has occurred in heavy weather ever since the house opened. The grant, added to earlier donations, should put paid to the periodic mopping up which has been necessary. Many thanks to the Community Foundation for their support.
Good food is such an important contributor to residents’ satisfaction with Abbeyfield. So we’re delighted to have two new well-trained chefs, who between them are responsible for meals six days a week. The couple, Ron and Luiza, along with our veteran Saturday cook Angie, cater to the individual preferences and needs of our residents, while adhering to nutritional principles – a level of personalized service that only a small residence like Abbeyfield can provide.
Abbeyfield Parkdale
finally has its own website! This past spring a wonderful new volunteer, Kim, asked how she could use her IT skills
to help Abbeyfield. What an
opportunity! Kim designed and set up our
website, and has undertaken to keep it current for us. Look for us at www.magma.ca/~Abbeyfot/Index.htm.
(In case you’re wondering, ‘Abbeyfot’ stands for Abbeyfield Ottawa.)
Speaking of technology, we would like to begin to communicate with our Friends using e-mail. Since it is our hope to keep you much better informed of our activities, we have to look at the most cost-effective way to keeping in touch. We absolutely promise not to share your e-mail address with any other organization. If you’re willing to have us contact you through e-mail, please e-mail us at abbeyfot@magma.ca. To encourage you, we will have a draw for something exciting from among those addresses we receive by the end of October.
The May Glebe Garage Sale was a great success, raising $800 for house needs. Since house needs are never-ending we’re doing it again, this time at the Olde Ottawa South Porch Sale, September 10th at 183 Cameron Avenue. We’ll be happy to receive your high-class donations for our tables. Call Abbeyfield at 729-4817 to arrange to drop them off. And then come buy!
We have said some sad goodbyes this summer. Florence, Pearl and our very first resident, Ruth, have moved to facilities that can provide long-term care. Abbeyfield seems strange without them, but we are happy to welcome Phyllis and Alex. Of course we are continuing in our search for new residents. Referrals from you, who are already Abbeyfield supporters, would be very helpful. Our Wednesday Tea and Tours continue through the fall from 2:00-4:00pm on September 28th, October26th, and November 23rd. And do remember we have a short stay room for out-of-town visitors and respite care, as well as for potential new residents.
Want to Volunteer? Abbeyfield House runs on volunteer labour. Right now, too few people are trying to do too many things. We need help with promotion, fund-raising, house management and volunteer recruitment. Call the volunteer house manager at 729-4817!
