House Happenings

Long-term Abbeyfield supporter Kiyoshi (Kay) Shimizu was our special guest at an Abbeyfield Open House in April, when many of her former City of Ottawa colleagues came to see her and catch up on Abbeyfield happenings.  The following week Mrs.Shimizu’s generous contributions to Abbeyfield Houses across Canada were recognized by the Governor General in a ceremony at Rideau Hall, where she received the Caring Canadian Award.  Her special gifts to Abbeyfield Ottawa have been greatly valued.

April was a special month for Abbeyfield for a second reason.  Project Clear Skies, a community giving program of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, gave us a grant of $4000 to cover some of the costs of solving our basement drainage problems. Combined with recent gifts from a number of Abbeyfield friends like you, the Project Clear Skies grant covered almost all of the costs.   When re-grading the land is completed this spring, we can get rid of the unsightly tarpaulin protecting our south foundation wall and make the side garden presentable again.

And presentable is exactly what we want to be for our series of Open Houses this spring on the fourth Wednesday of every month.  We’ve been inviting representatives of referring agencies and members of the community to come see for themselves what Abbeyfield has to offer.  Our cook bakes us a cake to have with tea, and Jo Ashford leads groups of visitors around the house.   The next Open Houses will take place May 25th and June 22nd.   Come join us between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m., and bring a friend with you.  As a Friend of Abbeyfield already, you’ll be especially welcome.

We’re doing some sprucing up inside Abbeyfield as well these days.  Several of our residents have moved recently to long-term-care facilities, and we are taking this opportunity to freshen up the walls with a spring coat of paint.  Of course this also means we need several  new residents.  Can you help us reach out to people who are looking for accommodation in a homelike environment, with home-cooked meals and the opportunity for company when they choose? If you know of any potential residents, call us at 729-4817 and bring them for tea and we'll give them our usual warm Abbeyfield welcome

And just a reminder -- we have a short stay room as well at Abbeyfield.  Ideal for respite care, for some convalescent situations, for accommodating visitors to the city, or for testing the Abbeyfield waters, our short stay room offers the same care and services that a permanent resident would experience.

Finally, on May 28th Abbeyfield will participate in the Great Glebe Garage Sale.  Come see our tables at 213 Glebe Avenue, where we’ll have a supply of pottery from two Montreal potter Friends, as well as other goodies.  In fact, if you would like to donate your high-class brick-a brac, we’ll be happy to receive it.  Call Abbeyfield at 729-4817 to arrange to drop it off.
