Short Stays

Abbeyfield House Parkdale provides family-style accommodation for up to 10 independent seniors.  Life in Abbeyfield House preserves privacy and independence, yet its supportive atmosphere provides companionship and freedom from worries and chores.

Although primarily intended as a permanent home for seniors, Abbeyfield has reviewed how it can best serve the continuum of continuing care in Ottawa.  While Abbeyfield House has no medical staff, support from the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), both personal and homemaking, may allow frail seniors to stay here, depending on their condition.  The staff at Abbeyfield House Parkdale provide nutritious meals, security, and stability, and maintain a comfortable and harmonious atmosphere. The House is wheelchair and walker accessible, with an elevator/lift, hand rails in the hallways, and grab rails in each private bathroom.

Consider Abbeyfield House Parkdale as a resource for the following:

Convalescent Care:

Following a hospital stay until able to resume independent living.  Situations which could be handled at Abbeyfield include:

  • Convalescence after hip replacement
  • Post-operative (with visits from a visiting nurse/personal care worker as needed)
  • Other conditions depending on individual assessment

Respite Care:

For a disabled or frail family member, respite care allows caregivers a temporary or short-term relief e.g. when a spouse goes to hospital, when family members must go out of town, or just for relief.

Individuals need to be able to:

  • Feed themselves
  • Get to the dining room
  • Look after their own personal care (CCAC may provide personal care for those who find this difficult)

Individuals with chronic illnesses, e.g., Parkinson’s or early dementia can be accommodated depending on the degree. Individual assessment needed.

Out of town situations:

  • People who need temporary accommodation while family member is in hospital
  • Senior moving from another town or city needs temporary accommodation until permanent housing is found.
