Professional Standards for Teachers of the Alexander Technique
The ease and success of your learning the Alexander Technique will depend upon the competence of your teacher. Professional training standards for teachers of the Alexander Technique are therefore taken very seriously.
The original parent regulatory body is The Society of Teachers of the F.M. Alexander Technique (STAT), in London, England. More recently, a second regulatory body, Alexander Technique International (ATI) based in Boston, MA, USA, has emerged and acquired worldwide respect. Both STAT and ATI are working tirelessly to ensure continuing high standards for teachers of the Alexander Technique.
STAT requirements for an approved teacher training course include that:
- The Director of an approved teacher training course must have a minimum of 10 years experience in teaching the Alexander Technique to the general public.
- Each instructor working in an Alexander teacher training course is permitted to have responsibility for a maximum number of five students. In this manner, a ratio of instructors to students no greater than 1 to 5 is ensured.
- STAT certified teacher training courses are full time for a minimum of three years.
Thus trained, a teacher of the Alexander Technique has learned to embody the Alexander Technique, to ‘be’ the Alexander Technique. He/she will be able to exemplify it for you, in mind, body and feeling.
High standards like these are unusual in today's dollar-driven world. They represent a genuine and serious effort to ensure continuing excellence in the teaching of the Alexander Technique.
