My visit to the Devil's Quoits, Oxfordshire, in the spring of 1998 was an interesting affair. I had no idea of the state of the circle, it is listed in many books of mine and I have never seen any accompanying notes beside its name. I should have become suspicious when I approached the area and found myself driving through a landscape thrown up by HUGE open cast gravel pit operations......

After asking a lady in the village where the Devil's Quoits stone circle was I was directed into the quarrying site. She had heard there was supposed to be some sort of prehistoric remains in the area but knew nothing else. The quarrying turned out to be several operations each occupying great amounts of land, which had been turned over to get at the sand or gravel or whatever was underneath the top soil.

The road led me to a final plant entrance, so I parked up next to the site office of Greenways and asked in there if anyone had heard of a stone circle in the area. You could tell tey weren't asked that question very often.
