Swinside stone circle is a real gem. Far too impressive to appear on these pages really. After all I am trying to collate all the hard done by, unknown, shabby and neglected ancient monuments here, and Swinside is none of those things.

The close set stones are all still erect, in quite a large circle. Standing in an open field there is no heather or bracken growth to obscure them. With the glorious rolling hills surrounding the site like the rim of a great bowl, Swinside was pleasant to visit, in the midst of a day spent trying to work out if we were really at the correct map reference, looking for vanished traces of its fellow-monuments. |
