MARINONI
LEGGERO
Giuseppe
Marinoni started Cycles Marinoni in 1975 and the company
continues
to build bikes, in the Montreal area
(Quebec,
Canada), to this day. Cycle Marinoni builds steel frames for all
styles from lightweight racing frames to purposefully built touring
models.
The bike pictured here is the Leggero model and was built in the mid
90s.
The lugged frame is made out of Columbus EL-OS tubing and
Henry
James lugs. As pictured, the bike weighs in at 22.4 lbs, ouch!
TECHNICAL
Columbus
EL-OS
is a steel alloy which, unlike the Reynolds
753 and Tange Prestige tubesets does not derive its
strength
from heat-treatment, but from the alloying of niobium and
vanadium.
Columbus EL was the first of the so-called "Nivacrom" steels and has
since
been followed by tubesets with different shapes and
butting
profiles (e.g., Genius, Neuron, Nemo,
and Max). Presently, Columbus' new high performance
tubesets
are Foco and Ultra-Foco, a steel alloy containing
manganese,
chrome, molybdenum and vanadium, and branded Thermachrom. This
fine-grain
steel alloy has characteristics of increased
temperability
and hardening as well as, high resistance to corrosion and
wear. Foco is very similar to Reynolds 853 in its
material
properties, but lighter still!
