Woodstrip boats are created by glueing wood strips around a series of forms which create the shape you have chosen. This hull is then sanded smooth and fiberglassed on both sides with waterproof epoxy. A tension and compression skin is then created in this process in which the outer & inner layers, absorb most of the stresses. Very little stress is absorbed by the "filler" be it foam, balsa wood or cedar.

The Gougeon Brothers refer to this as Monocoque construction. This allows for a clean, lightweight and strong hull free of structural ribs. The greater the distance between the fiberglass cloth layers the greater the strength of the hull. Epoxy is the adhesive of choice. This is then coated with a high quality ultraviolet absorbant, marine grade varnish to protect the epoxy. This clear finish allows the beauty of the wood which you have chosen to shine through. Inwales, outwales, seats, yoke and decks are then installed to complete your project.

Other species such as Redwood,Alaska Yellow Cedar & Sitka Spruce in random lengths are all available on a special order basis.

All strips are packaged in bundles of 20 and are all the same length. Colour matching is assured since all strips from the same board are together within the same bundle. This allows you to order any length of bundle to suit your requirements. We use only high grade coastal stock Western Red cedar and it is available in full lengths up to 20'. Colour characteristics vary from light honey to tan to reddish brown with some dark red.

Clear Eastern White Cedar is available in lengths from 6' - 12' on a regular basis. Colour varies from light brown to bright white. Alaska Yellow Cedar is a light yellow in colour as well as being denser and heavier than Western Red Cedar. Being an alpine tree its growth rings are very close together and consequently harder and more suited for impact resistence.

Clear Eastern White Pine is available in 6' - 16' lengths. Colour varies from cream to a golden yellow. Somewhat softer than Western Red Cedar it is an excellent choice for substituting white cedar where longer clear lengths are required.
