Nimrod's
Grimoire is a very impressive package that adds 51 custom spells to Baldur's
Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast. Even more impressive, the Grimoire
was created over 3 years ago, and a mere 9 months after the release of
Baldur's Gate I. It was created solely with a hex editor, before
a specific spell editing utility like IEEP or DLTCEP even existed.
It was quite a feat.
At the time, it was hailed
as an extraordinary accomplishment, but as time passed, it began to fade
into the background. With the retirement of TeamBG's Item Text Editor
utility, it also became very difficult to properly import the Grimoire.
Even though it has lost much
of the fame it once had, Nimrod's Grimoire is still a very remarkable creation.
Thus, it has been repackaged for easier use, and to allow proper importation
with the modern Infinity Engine tools.
After installing the Grimoire,
all the new spells are available through a spell merchant. There
are 18 new mages spells, 21 new priest spells, and 12 new innate abilities.
All the new spells have excellent descriptions as well as associated mage
spell scrolls, priest prayer candles, and innate ability potions.
Characters who play with
experience cap removed will probably be glad to find several high level
spells, going up to spell level 7 for both mage and priest classes.
Even if you don't remove the XP cap, the Grimoire still contains many lower
level spells for you to use. The Grimoire also gives several spells
you may recognize from Baldur's Gate II, such as Stoneskin, Gate and Heal.
Balance-wise, the Grimoire
may be a little powerful for an otherwise unedited game, although it is
great if you like to remove the experience cap and want powerful spells
for your high level spell casters. The Grimoire might also be a useful
addition if you play any high level mods.
All in all, Nimrod's Grimoire
is an impressive, extensive and useful addition to Baldur's Gate.
Give it a try. |
