Ottawa Beaux-Arts Heritage Walking Tour

This tour of Central Ottawa, (part of the former "Upper Town"), shows the influence of the architectural methods of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on Ottawa architecture during the period of its greatest success in North America.

The tour on 11 August 2002 starts at the former Union Station, 2 Rideau Street, and covers buildings on Confederation Square, Sparks, and Wellington Streets. It is a 2 km walk (wheelchair accessible) and is planned to take 90 minutes, starting at 2:00 pm.

Charge is $10, (Heritage Ottawa members $8). The tours are run by volunteers and proceeds support the architectural conservation programs of Heritage Ottawa.

Several significant buildings beyond the walking range of the tour are also mentioned. Two were visited on previous tours.

This website includes notes and photographs for all the buildings, architects' biographical information, and quotes on Beaux-Arts method and styles from leading proponents and critics.
