into literacy
Although
he was there primarily to promote literacy, Deep River Constable Marek
Brela found the students at St. Mary's School were just as enthusiastic
about trying on trying on his handcuffs as they were about reading and
writing. Brela was joined by Mayor David Thompson, local real estate
agent Colleen Payer and North Renfrew Times associate editor Vance
Gutzman in speaking to the students about the importance of literacy as
part of Family Literacy Day on Friday.

FEBRUARY
2, 1977: Markus and Son (Pembroke) has submitted a tender of $56,877
for repairs to the areana roof, the lowest of five bids received.
However, some members of the arena board reported receiving calls
agitating for a new arena building. Administrator Jim Evraire said last
week the board doesn't feel it has the mandate to take on construction
of a new arena. He said the board feels it was appointed to administer
the present arena building.

Two Deep River area residents were
killed Tuesday in a fatal crash on Highway 17.
