SPEA backs Senate bill

The group that represents professionals in Atomic Energy of Canada's Candu business side is supporting a new Senate bill that would limit the government's sale of AECL.

The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) said last week it welcomed the efforts of Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette to generate more awareness and debate on future of AECL.

Hervieux-Payette tabled a bill in the Senate November 19 that would limit the government's sale of AECL to 30 per cent of the Crown corporation, while the federal government would be required to retain 70 per cent control.

"The Senator's bill reflects one of the solutions that we have been advocating for AECL," said Peter White, president of SPEA.

"The future of the company requires a made-in-Canada resolution with private sector partners ready to provide capital and expertise to grow the company as well as government support."

"With billions of dollars being spent on new reactors, AECL has a tremendous future ahead of it," White added.

"What is critical for potential clients is to see the government's support for the company. AECL's competitors have government support in their operations and that has allowed them to successfully bid on contracts."

The federal government needs to demonstrate that it is a willing and supportive partner for AECL to succeed, White said.

"Senator Hervieux-Payette understands the need for a strong, vibrant Canadian nuclear industry.

“Her bill and the government's willingness to support it will help ensure the 70,000 jobs related to the nuclear industry remain here and grows.

“But if the government retains majority ownership without actively supporting AECL, then we are left with the status quo, which is unacceptable.”
