Community Foundation plays Santa

At a year-end reception of the Deep River and District Community Foundation held in early December, president Bob French announced local projects that were paid for, or supported, with money from the Community Foundation during 2010.

Amounts distributed included $4,300 to North Renfrew Family Services for ongoing community service projects; $2,260 to the Riverbank Project; $1,000 to the Deep River library for new books; and $500 to the Chalk River library for a bicycle rack.

There was also $2,080 to the Four Seasons Conservancy for a nature trail project and ongoing costs; $2,000 to the Deep River Science Academy for a trial distance-learning project; $500 to the School House Museum for painting costs; $500 to the Environmental Support Group for startup costs; and $100 to the Food Bank.

As well, investment income was generated for annual scholarships and bursaries including $1,000 to the Deep River Science Academy bursary, $750 to the Elizabeth Hulbert musical scholarship, $500 to the Mackenzie High School Reunion Fund bursary, and $500 to the Eastern Star bursary.

In making the announcement of these cash distributions for 2010, French gave credit to the named and agency funds within the foundation that generated the money.

Four of the named funds provided much of the money and direction for their disbursement: Hulbert Fund, Mary Moore Memorial Fund, Milton Family Fund, and the Mary Jane and Bob Brown Fund.

Seven community agencies also have endowment funds created within the Community Foundation, for example the United Way and North Renfrew Family Services.

French encouraged the reception participants to ask their family members to also support the foundation, and for local citizens to consider creating their own family funds to leave a legacy, donate to existing funds, or leave a bequest to sustain the local quality of life for future generations.
