Hospital welcomes new doctor

Joins North Renfrew Family Health Team

The Deep River and District Hospital has announced the recruitment of a third family physician into the North Renfrew Family Health Team.

Dr. Cherinet Seid started his full-time position at the health team in early January and also works part-time in the emergency department.

He joins Dr. Erin Harrigan and Dr. Hanene Ben Amor who were recruited into the Family Health Team over the past 18 months.

Dr. Seid completed his family medicine residency with the University of Ottawa Medical School following earlier medical degrees and training from both Scotland and Ethiopia.

He is married with two young children and plans to re-locate his wife and children to the Upper Ottawa Valley over the summer period.

His addition means that there are now a total of eight family physicians serving the approximate 10,000 residents of hospital’s catchment area.

“We are very pleased to have added Dr. Seid to our local physician team,” said hospital CEO Larry Schruder.

“This is great news for anyone in our immediate communities without access to a family physician; it is also great news for our existing team of community physicians as it lightens their load in the emergency department and in caring for patients admitted to the hospital.

“I want to acknowledge the financial support of three local municipal councils and the hospital who collectively supplemented the provincial support available through the Northern Rural Recruitment and Retention Program to enable this successful outcome.”

Deep River Mayor David Thompson welcomed the announcement.

“This is indeed great news,” he said.

“Having access to a primary care physician is a huge benefit to the residents of North Renfrew and will go a very long way in attracting new families to our community.

“Congratulations to Larry Schruder, the hospital board and all those involved in physician recruitment.”

The North Renfrew Family Health Team continues to accept new patients from the hospital’s catchment area who are registered at Health Care Connect as they fill the practices of both Dr. Ben Amor and Dr. Seid.

Residents of the area who do not have access to a local family physician should ensure that they are registered with the unattached patient registry by contacting Health Care Connect at 1-800-445-1822.
