January 26, 2011Board releases list of namesAlgonquin Public School? Deep River Collegiate? Laurentian View Learning Centre?Those are just three of the many names proposed for the “new” JK-12 school set to open in Deep River next September in the current Mackenzie High School building. The Renfrew County District School Board invited proposals for the name of the school before Christmas. The deadline for submissions was January 14. The proposed names will be reviewed by an advisory committee and a shortlist of three will be forwarded to the school board for a final decision. The board expects to make its final decision “hopefully by the end of April.” The complete list of proposed names includes 123 submissions, but there is lots of overlap. On the Facebook site “Mackenzie Mustangs - Save the name,” former MHS student Josh Cronk noted that 58 of the potential names (47 per cent of the submissions) are based on the name “Mackenzie.” Among the other submissions, 14 (11%) were some variation on “Deep River,” 21 (17%) were for “original names” like “Riverview High” or “Marie Curie High School,” and 16 (14%) were for “names I doubt the board would consider,” Cronk said - names like “Manhattan Project PS” or “Mackmoriskeye.” Nine of the suggested names were for some combination of Mackenzie and Morison, and possibly Keys, one was for “Morison Public School,” and four were a variation of “Laurentian” - Hills, Valley or View. “Hopefully 47% of the suggested names would be enough to convince the board how important the name is to the town,” Cronk said.
