Local woman killed in crash

Highway 17 was closed for almost six hours last Thursday as police investigated a fatal accident between Chalk River and the Petawawa Forestry.

OPP say Pat Harvey, 72, of Deep River died at the scene when her eastbound Ford Focus collided with a westbound GMC Sierra pickup.

The driver of the pickup, Joe Torlone, 57, and passenger Jack Watson, 64, both of Timmins, were taken to hospital in Deep River with minor injuries.

The highway was closed from approximately 11:15 am to 5:15 pm.

The Laurentian Hills fire department as well as Renfrew County paramedics assisted at the scene.

OPP traffic collision investigators are assisting with the investigation. The cause of the crash has not been released.

Pat Harvey was an active member of the community and condolences began rolling in soon after the news was posted on the NRT Facebook page. Among the comments:

“Condolences to the family. Just an awful tragedy. She was the best swim teacher ever and will be missed,” said Dani Hutcheon.

“Pat was a beautiful person in every sense of the word!” said former neighbour Andy Cox.

“She was always there when anyone needed help and was always ready to dig in and do whatever she could even if it was just to be there and keep you company.

“She was also someone you could count on to always have a funny story to tell. She was an excellent athlete and loved tennis and skiing and lots of other things I am not aware of.

“She and her husband were our neighbours for many years until my parents moved to their apartment and they were great neighbours.

“My condolences to Malcom and his family for their loss. She will be missed by all who knew her.”

“Sincerest condolences to the entire family. Pat will most certainly be missed by many people. I feel lucky to have known her,” added Heather Lank Wood.

Patricia Anne Harvey was the beloved wife of Malcolm Harvey of Deep River, and loving mother of Michael, Deborah and Rebecca.

Visitation will be at the Valley Funeral Home Thursday, February 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Deep River Community Church on Friday, February 11 at 11 am.
