Mayor warns of water
"scam"

Area residents are being
warned to be on their guard with a company that may be using
questionable tactics to get people to buy water purification systems.
As was reported on the CBC's "Marketplace" recently, a company calls
people on the phone and tells them the firm is testing for toxins in
their drinking water.
People who invite the firm's representatives into their homes are sold
water purification systems they may not even need, the CBC stated.
People in both Deep River and Laurentian Hills have received such calls
from a company stating it was testing for toxins in their water.
"It's unscrupulous, at the very least," Deep River Mayor David Thompson
told his council members last week, calling the tactic a “scam.”
Several local residents called the NRT last week to warn they had been
subject to a high-pressure sales pitch once the company representative
was in the door.
In at least one case, a woman said her husband was physically pushed
into a corner and she was grabbed by the arm.
People with any concerns about such a company are asked to call the
police or their local municipality.
