School boards top "100K Club"

by Terry Myers

Is it any wonder why the province's education dollars continue to be stretched?

The number of employees at Renfrew County's two main school boards who qualify for the province's “100K Club” has jumped again, leading the way among local agencies on the province's list of public sector employers with staff earning more than $100,000.

The Renfrew County District School Board placed 53 employees on the so-called “sunshine list” in 2010.

That's up from 44 in 2009, 37 in 2008, and just 12 in 2007.

The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board had another four employees in the club last year, bringing its total to 32.

The Catholic board had 28 on the list in 2009, 15 in 2008, and just six in 2007.

Combined, the two school boards have seen their total number of $100,000 earners jump from 18 to 85, an increase of 370 per cent.

RCDSB director of education Roger Clarke led the way among the two school boards, with reported earnings of $179,752 in 2010.

Former director of education Eleanor Newman was not far behind with reported earnings of $172,120.

Also on the list were the school board's four superintendents, information technology manager and special education administrator, 28 principals, 13 vice principals, and four teachers.

Director of education Michele Arbour was the top earner at the Catholic school board, with reported income of $166,572 last year.

The board's $100,000 earners also included two superintendents, two department managers, 22 principals, three vice principals and two teachers.

Other major employers on the county list include the Pembroke Regional Hospital with 17 employees (including top earner Pierre Noel, the hospital's president and chief executive officer, with earnings of $288,837), the County of Renfrew with 13 (led by former chief administrative officer Norm Lemke, $232,031), and the city of Pembroke with 15.

Twelve of Pembroke's “100K Club” were members of the police department, including top earner, Chief David Hawkins at $149,586. The city's top administrator was CAO Terry Lapierre at $146,853.

Locally, the Deep River and District Hospital had three members of staff on the sunshine list, led by chief executive officer Larry Schruder. Schruder had reported earnings of $153,402 last year.

Deep River Police Chief Mike Ueltzhoffer was the only municipal employee from the area to be included on the list, with earnings of $117,711.

The earnings reported on the salary list include all earnings reported on the Canada Revenue Agency’s T-4 slips for an employee.

In addition to regular salary, that can include retroactive pay, severance or vacation payouts, and overtime.

The $100,000 list is released at the end of March each year under the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act.
