Landfill expansion
eyed
by Denise Walker
The town of Deep River is asking Laurentian Hills for a contribution to
the cost of expanding the Millers Road Landfill site.
Deputy Mayor Anne Giardini told the public works committee last week
that the town had received a letter from Deep River, chief
administrative officer, Michelle Larose.
In the letter, Larose says that Deep River will apply to the province
to expand the site by 100,000 cubic metres.
"This would extend the life of the site from 8-20 years. The Bagg’s
landfill site would therefore benefit from the additional capacity of
the Miller site by not diverting waste earlier rather than later,"
Larose stated in her letter.
Currently, construction and demolition waste is sent to the Millers
Road Landfill site.
The cost of the work to do the application is $42,500, and Deep River
is asking Laurentian Hills to pick up half the tab.
Giardini said that the committee needed more information before making
a recommendation.
“We want to know what work has already been done, and we want some more
financial information,” she said.
Laurentian Hills' chief administrative officer, Wayne Kirby, said that
part of the problem was that over the last three years, “We have been
told quite bluntly that Millers Road is owned and controlled by Deep
River. Laurentian Hills residents have to pay to use it.”
Councillor Bruce Boucher pointed out that both towns now had new
councils and that it would be worthwhile to ask some questions.
