Petawawa mayor tops pay list

by Kay McQuade

It’s not quite the sunshine list, but the county released the 2010 list of salaries and expenses for elected officials in the 17 municipalities that make up Renfrew County.

The town of Petawawa with a population of 9,353 topped the list when it came to council remuneration for both salaries and expenses.

Mayor Bob Sweet received $32,473.95 in salary and benefits with expenses of $6,057.15.

Population alone does not reflect the salary received, as the second highest mayoral salary on the list belongs to the Township of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards with a population of only 2,300 where Mayor Janice Visneskie received $31,249.93 in salary and benefits, although it must be pointed out that she received no expenses.

Deep River (pop 4,072) was ranked 10th on the list with a mayoral salary of $16,559.30.

Mayor Dick Rabishaw of Laurentian Hills (pop 2,693) receives slightly more in salary and benefits at $18.785.65, earning a ninth place ranking.

Reeve of Head, Clara & Maria (pop 232) Tammy Stewart received a salary of $4,469 giving her a 16th place ranking out of 17 municipalities in total.

Out of the 10 municipalities with a deputy mayor, Laurentian Hills outranks Deep River once again, at sixth, paying a salary of $12,531.61 as compared to $11,030.97 for Deep River, which is ranked eighth.

Total council expenses for the municipalities were also detailed.

Deep River, with a total of seven councillors (including mayor and deputy mayor) had expenses of $75,928.07 to rank 10th out of 17 once again.

Laurentian Hills, with five councillors (including mayor and deputy mayor), had expenses of $72,422.28 and a 13th place ranking.

Head, Clara & Maria with five councillors (including reeve) totalled expenses of $16,729.77 receiving a 16th place ranking.
