Liberals, Greens name
candidates
With time ticking down towards
Ontario's provincial election on October 6, voters in
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke now have a full slate of candidates to
choose from.
The Liberals announced last week that John O'Leary will carry the
banner for the governing party.
O'Leary has been serving as the senior education advisor to Premier
Dalton McGuinty at Queen's Park, but says his roots in the Ottawa
Valley go deep.
His ancestor Daniel Duggan was one of the first settlers in the
community of Mount St. Patrick, and six generations of his family have
lived in the Valley since, with family members still living in the town
of Renfrew.
In addition to his work in the premier's office, O'Leary also worked
previously in the Ministry of Education and in the private sector with
the Dairy Farmers of Ontario and other agricultural organizations.
O'Leary said he wants to run a campaign focused on the McGuinty
government's achievements in things like education, health care and
green energy.
“I want to run a high road campaign. I'm not here to slam other folks,”
he said.
“I love the Ottawa Valley and I love this riding,” he added.
“I'm honoured and excited to be the Liberal Party candidate.”
The Green Party has also named a candidate for the October election in
this riding.
Kyle Jones, 27, is a Practical Nursing graduate of St. Lawrence College
and is currently working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health
Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa.
Having spent the last two years of his career working in the mental
health field, and four years prior to that working in long term care,
Jones says he has seen first hand “the demands and challenges that
Ontario’s health care system is faced with.”
“I believe strongly in the need for a truly democratic, accountable and
transparent government that supports individual rights and freedom of
expression,” he said.
“I plan to take my values to Queen's Park and represent the
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke riding as a truly honest and responsible
MPP.”
MPP John Yakabuski will seek re-election as the Conservative candidate
in the riding, while the NDP is represented by Brian Dougherty, an
electrical worker from Arnprior.
