DRCA to host candidates meeting

Local voters will get a chance to meet their candidates for the October provincial election next week - most of them, anyway.

The Deep River Community Association will sponsor a “Meet the Candidates” night next Tuesday, September 27 beginning at 7 pm at the Deep River Legion.

The meeting will be moderated by North Renfrew Times associate editor and former Laurentian Hills mayor Vance Gutzman.

Three of the main party candidates have confirmed that they will be there - Liberal John O'Leary, New Democrat Brian Dougherty, and Kyle Jones of the Green Party.

However, as of Monday, PC candidate and sitting MPP John Yakabuski was still not confirmed for the meeting.

Yakabuski's campaign manager Zig Mintha has suggested the MPP may not attend the meeting because Tuesday is also the night of the televised provincial leaders' debate.

Also unconfirmed as of Monday was the fifth and newest candidate in the race, Murray Reid of the Ontario Confederation of Regions Party (CoR).

Tilton Beaumont carried the CoR banner in the last provincial election in 2007, winning just 76 votes across the riding.

According to the party's website, CoR is dedicated to the principle of “direct democracy to make politics more inclusive and to make the political arena a more level playing field where (the) people of Ontario are equal partners in the government rather than subservient subjects.”

CoR says it would send base decisions on major public issues on the results of a public referendum.

“Only applying the principle of direct democracy in governance will free the Ontarians (sic) from the type of democratic abuses recently experienced.”

Voters will go to the polls across Ontario on Thursday, October 6.

For those who want to cast their ballots early, there will also be advance polls up until September 30.

In Deep River, advance polls will be held at the town hall every day from September 22 to 27. Advance polls will be open from 10 am to 8 pm.
