Town to create 'wall of fame'

by Vance Gutzman

Deep River council wants to acknowledge the achievements of its residents in the environs of the town hall.

Council has endorsed a notice of motion brought forward by Mayor David Thompson, calling on the municipality to publicly acknowledge the varied accomplishments of current and former residents in the areas of sports, arts and culture, science, business and the humanities.

The acknowledgment of their achievements would come in the form of a "Wall of Recognition" in the town hall, replete with appropriate photographs and descriptive plaques.

The mayor is looking for a member of the community to come forward and help spearhead the project.

"Hopefully we can find a champion in our community who would be willing to take this on," Thompson said.

"If anything, the problem might be we don't have enough wall space," Councillor Terry Myers remarked.

Tax rates

It's not always a good thing being Number One.

Mayor David Thompson told council recently that Renfrew County has compiled a 2011 residential tax rate report, showing that, of the 17 municipalities in the county, Head, Clara and Maria had the highest increase (18.5 percent) in its tax rate between this year and last.

Deep River's tax increase, on the other hand, was at the very bottom of the list, with a 7.6 percent reduction in its 2011 tax rate from 2010.

"We're one of three municipalities that actually had a decrease in its tax rate," Thompson said.

"That's a testament to the work of this council in the 2011 budget deliberations."

But the work isn't done yet, as the mayor noted that, despite the one-year decrease, Deep River still has the highest overall property taxes in the county.

"But we're certainly moving in the right direction," he said.
