Local businesses
nominated for awards
Two local businesses are among the
finalists for the “Small Business of the Year” award from the Upper
Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce (UOVCC).
The UOVCC announced the finalists for its upcoming Business Achievement
Awards Gala last week.
An independent selection committee reviewed the nearly 80 nominations
that were received and have named the top three finalists in each
category.
There are nine categories that were open for public nomination in which
three finalists are named.
Among the finalists for Small Business of the Year are Harding's
Pharmacy (Christine Harding), located on Highway 17 in Deep River, and
Valley Wines (Brian McInall), on Champlain St.
They will face off against the Whitewater Cobden Sun (Howard Winters).
In other award categories, the UOVCC announced that finalists for Young
Entrepreneur of the Year are Kendra Johnsen (Crossfit Poise), Emma
Leavey (Pick-It-Fence, Pembroke) and musician Ben Rutz.
Finalists for New Business of the Year are: Choice Contracting (Mike
Garon), Jessica Sernoskie Fitness (Jessica Sernoskie) and The Valley
Gazette (Michel Lavigne).
Awards are also given to Medium and Large Business of the Year, based
on number of employees.
Medium Business of the Year finalists are Custom Draperies/Furniture
King (Eileen Malette), Helferty’s Disaster Restoration (Devlin
Helferty) and NRTC Communications (Martha Overton).
Large Business of the Year finalists include Allen Vanguard, H&H
Construction and Scotiabank Pembroke.
The final award for the business category is a Feature Award, which has
a recognition change each year.
This year’s focus is on the skilled trades, and the Skilled Trades
Employer of the Year Finalists include Atomic Energy of Canada Limited,
Terry Waito Homes and Valley Truck & Spring Service/Pembroke Truck
Centre.
All finalists will be presented with an achievement certificate, and
winners chosen from each category at the Business Achievement Awards
Gala, being held on Saturday, January 28 at the Germania Hall in
Pembroke.
“We have, once again, received some excellent nominations which speak
volumes to the quality of businesses and community leaders we have in
the Upper Ottawa Valley,” said Gary Melnyk, president of the Upper
Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“Those who have been selected as finalists should be very proud and we
are all very excited to see who the award recipients will be at this
year’s gala.”
The awards are taped by TV Cogeco and re-broadcast at a later date on
the community television station throughout Renfrew County.
