Townships get back to business

by Kay McQuade

It was back to the business of running the townships for the councillors at Head, Clara & Maria during last Friday’s council meeting - with no mention of code of conduct or harassments complaints appearing anywhere on the agenda.

The only reference to the events of the past several months was to announce that there will be a special closed session of council this Thursday, January 26, in council chambers to receive and discuss the report and recommendations of Ray Bonenberg of the Delfi Group.

The Delfi Group was hired by council to investigate the harassment complaints filed by the township clerk Melinda Reith against council in early October 2011, and the harassment and code of conduct complaint filed by an unnamed ratepayer against council in general, councillors Dave Foote and Jim Gibson in particular, and against township clerk Melinda Reith in December 2011.

In a related matter, Reith reported she has been contacted by Yvonne Hegge of the Ombudsman’s office concerning the investigation of the closed sessions of council on October 21 and November 4, 2011 which dealt with various harassment complaints filed by the clerk and a code of conduct complaint filed by resident Wayne Clouthier.

She believes they will be contacting each councillor in the near future concerning these sessions.

By-election update

Residents of HCM will have a chance to “Meet and Greet” the township by-election candidates, listen to a brief statement and ask questions on Sunday, January 29, from 2 to 4 pm at the township hall in Stonecliffe.

Two candidates, Doug Antler and Debbi Grills, are vying for the vacancy resulting from the resignation of Ed Aiston last December.

Election day is Monday, February 13, 2012 and an advance poll will be held on Saturday, February 4.

Voters are reminded to bring their identification; they won’t be able to vote without it.

Full details are available on the townships website.
