Two killed in highway crash

Two Deep River area residents were killed Tuesday in a fatal crash on Highway 17.

The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment said Alan Smith, 79, and Marinea Smith, 74, were both pronounced dead at the scene of a three-vehicle collision on 17 near Pembroke between Round Lake Road and Forest Lea Road.

The collision was reported at approximately 2:59 pm.

Police say their investigation indicates that a westbound 1993 Dodge Spirit driven by Alan Smith collided with an eastbound 2008 Chev pickup truck.

The pickup truck was driven by Kim Labbe, 51, also of Deep River.

The collision occurred in the eastbound lane of Hwy 17.

Labbe and his passenger, Cindy Labbe, also 51, of Deep River were both taken to Pembroke Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

A third vehicle, driven by John Robertson, 49, of Stittsville was indirectly involved. Robertson was not injured.

Police say Highway 17 was reopened to traffic at 2 am on Wednesday.

The Laurentian Valley Fire Department, CFB Fire Department and County of Renfrew Paramedic Services assisted at the scene.

Police say the roads were snow covered, and it was snowing at the time of the collision.
