New Forest
Centre Signs for Highway 17
Two new signs,
outlining services available at the Forestry Centre were erected on the
East and West approaches on Highway 17. These highly-visible
directional signs include both summer and winter activities. This
project was initiated by the Friends and made possible through our
partnership with the Visitor Centre Municipal Committee.

Algonquin Park through
Time and Space
an
evening with acclaimed scientist and author Frank Ahern
sponsored by the Friends of the Petawawa Research Forest
-
How Algonquin has been
moulded over 1500 million years by amazing geological events;
-
How Algonquin’s topography
and climate dictate its forest communities;
-
How the forest is made of
many layers, and how local conditions determine the plants that make up
these layers;
-
How the legacy of the ice
ages can be seen in the patterns of Algonquin’s vegetation;
-
How the harsh realities of
the food chain and the population pyramid control everything from moose
to mice to microbes.

Celebratory Ceremony for
90 years of Research
Thursday,
October 30, 2008, 1:30 pm
The Petawawa
Research Forest is celebrating 90 years of research!
Since its establishment in
1918, the Petawawa Research Forest (PRF) has undergone several name changes;
however, its invaluable contributions to forest research have remained
constant.
Together with the Canadian
Wood Fibre Centre of Natural Resources Canada, we would like to invite you to
a celebratory ceremony at which a commemorative engraving, donated by the
Friends of the Petawawa Research Forest, will be unveiled.
Please join us to celebrate
with current and former employees, researchers who are currently conducting
research at the PRF, and many others. |

Publicity for
the Visitor Centre |
|
The Friends have
joined the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association to publicize the Visitor Centre
across Ontario. The Centre will be listed in the OVTA travel guide and
on the website. As well, a display ad will appear in the Road Map to
make visitors and residents aware of the many attractions that await them in
the forest. |

Woodlot Association Forestry Field Trip
|
 |
The Friends
assisted with the OWA Forestry Field Trip held on April 19. Grade 7 and 8
students from St. Mary's School in Deep River visited a woodlot area in
the PRF to learn about tree species, wildlife (birds, reptiles and
mammals), water ecology, water sampling and tree harvesting.
To support
this worthwhile educational experience, the Friends assisted as
guides, provided hip waders for the students and paid the transportation
costs
