CIS/CIAU History Vault
I am proud to provide this historical view on CIAU/CIS football championships
over the years, because I don't think this informaiton is generally
available anywhere else on the Internet. The source of this information
is the CIAU Almanac, Bob Adams' website, the OUA website and lots of
microfiche at the local library.
I am always glad to have people fill in
the missing details. email me at john-at-hayman.ca. Special thanks to Ian Speers and Bob Watkins for their
help.
Championship Trophies
- Canadian Championship
-
Vanier Cup
Awarded every year to the winner of the National football final. The
championship has been held from 1965-present, with the first two years
as an invitational event. The Cup is named after His Excellency
General George Vanier, who was Govenor-General of Canada when the trophy
was first awarded.
- National Semi-finals
The two national semi-final games are the
Mitchell Bowl and
the Uteck Bowl.
The locations of the bowl games rotate through the
conferences. By convention, the bowl game in the westernmost location
is called the Mitchell Bowl, while the bowl game in the easternmost
location is the Uteck Bowl.
-
Mitchell Bowl/Atlantic Bowl
The Atlantic Bowl was presented from 1959-2001. It was hosted in
Halifax every year and was a true Maritime tradition. In 2001, the CIS
elected to rotate the location of its football semi-final bowls.
In 2002, the Mitchell Bowl was created.
-
Uteck Bowl/Churchill Bowl/Forest City Bowl/Western Bowl/Central Bowl
The "other" national semi-final has gone by several names. The Uteck
Bowl was created in 2003, coinciding with the first year Halifax hosted a
semi-final since the bowls moved to a rotating format. From 1989-2002
this bowl game was known as the Churchill Bowl. From 1968-1988, the
bowl game has gone by many names, such as the Western Bowl, the Forest
City Bowl and the Central Bowl.
- National Quarter-finals
-
Yates Cup
The oldest continually awarded Football trophy in North America. It was
first presented in 1898 by Dr. H.B. Yates of McGill University.
It originally
served as the championship trophy for the "Big Four" (McGill, Queen's
Toronto, Western) of the Senior Interprovincial League, and has served as
the championship trophy for University teams based in Ontario and parts
of Quebec ever since.
Currently awarded to the winner of the OUA conference
playoffs.

Trophy has been awarded since 1960

Cup has been awarded since 1980. The link lists championships and alignments
