Carleton County Gaol

Carleton County Gaol

The Gaol was the site of the last public execution in Canada, that of Patrick Whelan, condemned for the murder of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, one of the fathers of the Confederation and an outspoken opponent of the Fenians. It is presumed that this vocal opposition to the Fenian cause was the source of his violent demise. The Gaol nowadays houses the Ottawa youth hostel. The mansard roof is typical of Second Empire style architecture.
