Mother of Mercy
Hospice in Chilanga, Zambia, provides care for
terminally ill patients, most of whom were HIV positive. The program was
established in 1992 and has grown
enormously since the first of the hospice buildings was erected for
around the clock medical care and palliative support. Today there is a
home-based program, a hospice, an out-patient clinic and a
school for orphans and vulnerable children.
As of June 2006, the Hospice has been
offering free antiretroviral drugs to patients. There are now 1700
clients enrolled in the antiretroviral clinic. There is also an outreach
program that follows up on patients who have been discharged from the
Hospice and are on antiretroviral drugs. Support groups for persons
living with HIV/AIDS have been going since 2004 and free testing for HIV is
offered to the community.
