E-mail from Mother of Mercy Hospice in Chilanga, Zambia

November 15, 2011

Dear Peter,
Thanks a lot for the communication and sorry for not replying immediately. I am so busy that now I have doubt if I will ever have enough time for everything. At the Hospice, we experience more and more challenges and the biggest challenge is to have money for the wages for our staff. We really don’t know our future at the moment. We try to approach the Ministry of Health in Zambia to support the hospice, especially to take our staff on government payroll because we will not be able to keep 24 hrs services. As you might know we have hospice with 21 beds for inpatients (24 hrs) and ART Clinic where the HIV/AIDS patients receive ART drugs. Every day the number of the patients grows and the clinic is more and more busy. We have now more than 1700 patients at ART clinic. The same staff needs to work both sides – hospice and clinic and we are understaffed. Very often I need to replace someone as we don’t have enough money to employ even part time staff. We can’t stop the services at the clinic because where would those vulnerable people go???

We appreciate your continuous support and we know that it will help us a lot. We also pray they the government will give us support in the future.

Regards,
Sr. Jeremia Mrowiec
