38th CANADIAN BATTALION War Diary from 1st April to 30th April 1917 The text in the original for April, 1917, consists of 30 pages of handwritten notes regarding the details of the day to day operation of the Battalion in the battlefield. Generally, much of the information included in the diary consists of routine life, drills and dispatches of little interest other that providing a glimpse into the boring drudgery of life in the trenches interspersed with actual "WAR". However, I have chosen the month of April, 1917 which is the month of the Battalion's participation in the attack of the German position at Vimy Ridge. The war diary entries for this month also included 6 appendices, one of which unfortunately was deleted at the time since it was an "unofficial" description of the battle of "Vimy Ridge" which probably did not co-incide with the "official" sanitized military version. I will include most of the existing entries. Appendix 2 is the official report on operations of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion from April 9th to April 13, 1917. Appendix 3 is in poor condition with some parts almost impossible to read from the photo-copies. As stated previously,
there are 30 handwritten pages for the month of April, 1917.
It will take me a little time to type this information and decipher
the writing. Check back from time to time as I will update as
the work progresses. It would appear that the Battalion's complete
war diary entries, which begin in 1916 and end in 1919 consists
of approximately 1000 pages of which only 30 plus the appendices
will be presented here.
