John Halliday

Lanark County's School Teacher

In 1963, Clarence Halliday completed his work on the Halliday family history. The Halliday/Holliday family of Lanark County, Ontario can trace their ancestry back to the Annan River in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. According to information discovered by Clarence, it was not until 1297 that an individual of that name became known to history - Thomas Halliday of Corehead.

Clarence wrote two histories, one comprised of a family history listing all the members of the family with basic biographical data, dates of birth, marriage, and death etc., and the other, a biography of John Halliday. John was a "forthright man, who knew what he wanted and never hesitated to say it."

Clarence contacted my grandmother, Elizabeth Maye (Holliday) Carmody in the early 1960's and forwarded a copy of his family history to her. The biography of John Halliday is 60 pages in length. You may view his biography chapter by chapter by clicking in the following table.

Unfortunately, my copy is a photocopy so the photographs Clarence included in his work were not clear enough to include. What is fortunate is that John Halliday's house was purchased and restored to its past glory. Click here for a photograph of the house and the gravestone identifying John Halliday and his wife, Margaret Johnstone.
