It was a gorgeous weekend to be on the water as Kanata Sailing Club included a start line for Fireballs as part of their annual fall regatta. Winds were moderate and generally from the North West (down the river valley) for both days of the weekend. The flat water and occasional 12 knot gust made for great Fireball conditions. The fleet was very competitive, with 4 different teams managing to win at least one race during the weekend. Much could be gained or lost even on the final half beat, with flyers sometimes paying off (especially for Mike McEvoy as he slimed his way to two 2nds as he found more pressure after banging a corner of the race course. He claims also to have lost a first place from the same fickle wind shifts, dropping to fourth in race 7 after leading the fleet for the first 5 legs.). Dave and Mona were clearly the team to beat this weekend, but usually there was another boat close enough to make it interesting. John Bryant and Ron Hughes made a guest appearance in a Fireball (borrowing the Carran's boat - they were on RC) and rumor has it that they may soon join the fleet on a more permanent basis. Their win in race 4 should be motivation enough. The Lockers snapped a rudder blade while rounding up under spinnaker with a boat full of water in race 2, but a quick roadtrip to NSC to grab the spare and they were back on the water again.
