The weather forecaster present at the skipper's meeting advised the RC to take advantage of Saturday's breeze and get as many races in as possible, as Sunday was forecast to be very light. The first two races on Saturday were in a very reasonable 8 to 10 knots. Then someone turned on the wind just prior to the 3rd race, and things got exciting. With the breeze from the north west (down the river valley) it was nice and steady, and the long fetch gave the waves a chance to build to a pretty good size. Three more races were run in the stronger conditions, with only 2 boats completing the endurance contest of all five races on Saturday. Others in the fleet came and went with boat damage and tired crews.
Sunday was unfortunately light and shifty. The club ran 2 races anyway, the second one being shortened to just a triangle as the breeze disappeared to nothing.
Eric Owston was impressive in the stronger conditions of Saturday, putting together a string of bullets in the 4 races that he won. This was sufficient to win the regatta, although Mike McEvoy came a close 2nd on points. Dave & Mona displayed their usual light air skills on Sunday by winning both races, and taking 3rd overall in the regatta.
Thanks to Eric and Joe for travelling from Montreal, and Derek and Nicola for visiting from Toronto.
