34th Annual TARTS (and Balls) Regatta - June 6,7 1998 - Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club

The Toronto Fleet was conspicuous by its absence as three of the four boats that sailed Saturday morning were visitors from out of town. Gary van Tassel and crew Pat were from a long way out of town making the drive from Virginia to sail 14666 Devil's Haircut, one of the new ACME Fireballs.

Saturday was cool with a 10 to 12 kt. breeze blowing out of the Humber River. The wind conditions all weekend long were very shifty and in several of the races the lead changed hans several times. In Race 1 Mike McEvoy and Jason Phillips led the way to the weather mark. Van Tassel and McEvoy swapped the lead in race 1 and after close racing finished 1 and 2 closely followed by Dave Landsberg and Mona Barakat. Derek Griffiths and Nicola Alston finshed fourth.

Race 2 was a carbon copy of Race 1 with McEvoy leading the way to the weather mark but being passed on the run by van Tassel and Landsberg when he sailed on the wrong gybe for the first part of the run.. Landsberg and van Tassel finished 1 and 2 with McEvoy in 3rd and Griffiths 4th.

The Toronto Fleets presence was augmented for Race 3 when Paul Rogers joined the proceedings. Race 3 had an extremely tight reach and 4 of the 5 boats were overlapped at the gybe mark. McEvoy and Landsberg capsized and while Dave and Mona recovered quickly and continued on to 2nd place, the capsize cost McEvoy the lead and after turtling, finished 5th. Van Tassel won again Derek and Paul were 3rd and 4th.

Sunday was essentially the same as Saturday. In race 4 Derek and van Tassel ran away and hid from the rest of the fleet. Race 5 was the most exciting of the regatta. A series of squalls proceeded down the race course and produced some exhilarating reaches and runs. McEvoy has opened a substantial lead on van Tassel and Landsberg at the beginning of the run. A poor gybe and a strong puff allowed both to catch up and van Tassel started the last beat slightly ahead of McEvoy with Landsberg in close pursuit. At the finish it was McEvoy by 6 inches over GVT2
