Introduction
This chapter presents many examples of the patterns studied so far, as they appear in real musical contexts.
Each pattern is presented in a simple form, and the key characteristics of the pattern are reviewed. Then, a
number of musical examples are presented in which the pattern in question plays an important role. The
examples progress from easily recognized uses of the patterns to decorated and extended samples.
There is no in-depth analysis here. The samples are examined just sufficiently to show the role played by
the pattern being studied. The hope is that seeing these patterns in many different settings will enhance the
student's ability to recognized them in other music.
