Types of Decoration

We have described analysis as the separation of common melodic-harmonic patterns and decorations, without being specific about how this is actually done. This chapter defines some common categories of decoration and elaboration, providing a vocabulary that will be useful in future analysis.

This is a presentation of analytical techniques. Although it may stimulate some creative imaginations, it is not intended as a list of compositional techniques and it should not be interpreted as an attempt to describe composers' thought processes.
