Welcome to Harmony for the Ears, a new approach to the
study of harmony in classical Western music.
Part of this new approach is the creation of a web-based book that can be read using a
computer. Now, I am not one of those who believe that information obtained through a
computer is inherently better, simply because the medium is cool. In fact, I generally prefer
regular paper books. They are easier to read, more portable and you never have to wait for
them to boot.
However, harmony textbooks have a serious deficiency. You can't hear them. The topic
discussed is music, but the book itself cannot play any of the sounds described. There are
many music examples in these texts, but running back and forth to the piano every page or
two is often not practical and generally not done.
In this text all the music examples can be played with a click of the mouse. An important
goal of this text is that those working with it learn what harmonic progressions sound like,
not just what they look like.
