AER Gertrude - Gertrude Mine

Gertrude Mine
Ontario Bureau of Mines - from Algoma Eastern Railway
Gertrude Mine, circa. 1902

This is the only known photograph of the Manitoulin & North Shore Railway and the Gertrude Mine.  It was taken from the 1902 Report of the Ontario Bureau of Mines and appeared in Dale Wilson's book The Algoma Eastern.  The small locomotive facing the tall building probably belonged to the mine and was almost certainly narrow gauge.  More than likely the train to the right of the picture is the regular mixed train from Sudbury.

By 1930, Gertrude Mine was the property of Inco Limited and had not operated in 28 years.  Gertrude consisted only of a wye used to turn locomotives servicing Creighton and a passing track.
