Welcome to our virtual tour of the Algoma Eastern
Railway. The purpose of this tour is to give you an idea of what
the
railway looked like in its heyday just prior to the 1930 CPR take-over.
The inventory of buildings is taken from an AER plan book given to the
CPR in 1930 at the time of the take-over. The map on this page is
taken from an article in the June 8, 1912 issue of the Engineering Record
describing the construction of the AER.
Except for a few bridges on the Little Current Sub, including the second
Spanish River crossing Through Truss Bridge and the swing bridge at Little
Current, which is now highway only, none of the original AER structures
remain standing. Many were demolished shortly after the take-over, or during
the abandonments of the thirties and forties. The last remaining buildings
including the unique station at Espanola and the Turner shop facilities
went under the wrecking ball in the 1980s.
Unfortunately the photographic record of most of these buildings is
either very light or completely non-existent. Because of this, many
parts of our tour are text description only. As further pictures
come to light we will try to post them to our tour pages.
Note: The tour is still under construction.
Please be patient with us!! |
