I have a note that there may be other children, shown in the 1851 census, Jane born 1843 and Philip 1846

This is the most important find because it gives us the
correct George Townsend and not the one born in 1796 baseborn to Ann Townsend. note by PeterT

Shows Ann Townsend [nee Ann Brittain age 31]

Husband William- married 29/9/1857 Christ Church Derry Hill.

Son Thomas age 8


William 3 [our grandfather born Studley].

Jonathon 2 [ Grandfather to Des and Doug.]

Ann Townsend was shown as ‘head of house’ William may have been away in the Miltia.

D.T. note.   I wonder if this is the Aunt Betsy that my mother used to refer to. Apparentely our two Grandfathers left the bosom of the family by way of an upstairs cottage bedroom window, they then walked to Wales for a job in a Colliery before joining the Royal Navy.

D.T. note 'Nimrod'  says that on 1851 census that 31 Derry Hill was occupied by a George and Mary Townsend and family.
