A very colorful and original fete, which is one of Krakow's biggest attractions,
"Lajkonik" or "The Swierzyniec Horse", is held on
the eighth day after Corpus Christi.
Legend traces it to a reputed Tartar attack on Krakow in 1281, when the city is said to have been saved by the bravery of the boatmen from its Zwierzyniec quarter. As a result, it is from Swierzyniec that the parade led by a rider on a hobbyhorse (Lajkonik) traditionally starts. |
