Legend traces it to a reputed Tartar attack on Krakow in 1281, when the city is said to have been saved by the bravery of the boatmen from its Zwierzyniec quarter. As a result, it is from Swierzyniec that the parade led by a rider on a hobbyhorse (Lajkonik) traditionally starts.
