Virtually at Krakow's doorstep lies a saltmine which has been in operation since the 13th century.
The galleries reach to a depth of 315 metres and the total length of its tunnel. shafts and gang
ways come to 150km. The marvels of this natural reserve include the fantastic
Crystal Grottoes, halite formations, the likes of which are not to be found anywhere else in
the world.
The "Warszawa" gallery, 125 metres down, is used as a ballroom and for tennis tournaments. The "Staszic" room, just 2 metres lower, was turned by the Germans during the last war into a plant manufacturing aircraft components. Lastly, another part of the mine contains a sanatorium for asthma sufferers. |
