New Perennials for 2002

from JEA Perennials

Many of our new plant introductions come to us from JEA Perennials, a specialty wholesaler of perennials, located in Strathroy, Ontario. JEA's owner, Janet Anderson is Canada's representative to the Perennial Plant Association and this position puts her in contact with many of the leading plant breeders from around the globe. She was recently in Ottawa talking to the Ottawa chapter of Landscape Ontario. While in Ottawa, Janet, husband Kees and daughters Gwyn and Kathleen dropped in for a visit and I had the opportunity to borrow her slides to put together the following gallery of new plants for 2002. Many of the plants are from Blooms of Bressingham (http://www.bobna.com) or Terra Nova Nurseries (http://www.terranovanurseries.com/). Go to their websites for additional infromation and photos. Failing a total crop failure, we'll have these plants for you this season. Enjoy the early preview of this season's exciting new perennials.

Anenome 'Party Dress'

'Party Dress' (a Blooms of Bressinham introduction) has huge fluffy double pink flowers, nearly twice the size (9cm.) of other japanese Anenomes, in late August through September. The 100 cm. tall plant has dark glossy green foliage. This cultivar may need some staking to keep it upright. Plant "Part Dress" in full sun to part shade in a rich, moisture-retentive soil as it is not drought tolerant.

Anthemis 'Susanna Mitchell'

'Susanna Mitchell' (a Blooms of Bressinham introduction) has creamy white flowers above a carpet of fern-like silvery foliage from late spring until late summer with a cutback. It prefers well-drained soils. Avoid wet soggy areas. A light cutback after the initial flowering will extend flowering into late summer. Expect this anthemis to be 20" to 24" tall by 36" wide in 2 years.

Artemisia indica 'Variegatus'

This Terra Nova introduction has deeply lobed bright green foliage and is brilliantly splashed with white in spring. The foliage reverts to solid green in the heat of summer. It is a fast spreader and drought tolerant. It grows to 1 meter tall.

Campanula poshcharskyana

'Blue Waterfalls'

'Blue Waterfalls' (a Blooms of Bressinham introduction) has low mounds of light green foliage covered with dark blue bell-shaped flowers in summer with some repeat bloom in fall. It is has low-growing, vigorous spreading habit growing to 8" to 10" tall by 24" wide. It grows best in moist but well-drained soils.

Campanula punctata

'Bowl of Cherries'

'Bowl of Cherries' (a Terra Nova introduction) is a compact mound of glossy green foliage with erect stems containing hundreds of cherry red bells. Deadheading provides almost continuous bloom throughout the season. It grows to about 30 cm tall.

Campanula 'Samantha'

'Samantha' (a Terra Nova introduction) variety resembles campanula carpatica 'Blue Clip' but is slower spreading. It has fragrant, viloet blue cup-shaped flowers. It gtows to about 10 cm. tall.

Campanula 'Saratro'

This is a compacy version of campanula 'Kent Belle' and grows to about 45 cm. tall. It produces huge violet-blue bells, in June to August, on well-branched plants. It's name comes from an Austrian nursery , 'Sarastro', where it originated.

Cimicifuga 'James Compton'

This purple-leafed cimicifuga is a smaller version of cimicifuga 'Brunette'. It grows to about 90 cm. tall compared to 'Brunette' at 175 cm. The early foliage is green but as the plant matures the foliage takes on its purple coloration. A bonus is its fragrant white flower spires!

Coreopsis 'Limerock Ruby'

'Limerock Ruby' (a Blooms of Bressinham introduction) is smothered with ruby red flowers from June through to frost if it is kept deadheaded. It grows to 18" to 22" tall by 32" to 36" wide in 2 years. Plant in full sun, in average well-drained soils.

It combines well with yellow Yarrow, Daylilies, Black-Eyed Susan, and Echinacea or in front of Ornamental Grasses.

Landscape Ontario awarded this plant the 'Best Rare and Unusual Plant' award for 2001.

Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams'

'Sweet Dreams' (a Blooms of Bressinham introduction) has bicoloured (petals pinkish white with raspberry base and yellow diasy-like centre) flowers on a vigorous growing plant which grows to 60 cm. tall. Shear the plant periodically for continuous bloom. Bloom begins in June and lasts through to fall with deadheading.

Dianthus 'Pixie'

This is an improved 'Spotty' giving fragrant pink/ deep pink centre flowers from spring through to fall. The glaucous blue foliage always looks fresh. Plants grow to 20 cm. tall and spread vigorously.

Dicentre 'Goldheart'

We had a few of these Bleeding Hearts last year and look forward to reports on how they fared in local gardens last season. 'Goldheart', with golden foliage, will grow to 75 cm. tall. It will not take full sun in its formative years so count on a shaded spot for this oddity. It will combine well with blue hostas. Keep it moist as it is not drought tolerant.

Dicentra ' King of Hearts'

'King of Hearts' (a Terra Nova introduction) performs better than 'Luxuriant'. It's lacy, "beyond blue" foliage and deep rose flowers surpass any other dicentra. Plant it in part shade in rich, well-drained but moisture-retentive soils. It spreads slowly and is disease-free. White Flower Farms in Connecticutt is where this cultivar originated.

Helleborus foetidus 'Wester Flisk'

Hellebores are showing themselves to be hardier than generally reported. They are extremely early flowering (shortly after snow melt) and provide an early season garden floral treat. This helleore has red tinged flower stalks and grayish broze evergreen foliage. It grows to 50 cm. tall.

Heuchera ' Amber Waves'

'Amber Waves' (a Terra Nova introduction) has two-toned leaves featuring amber to gold coloured leaves in early season. Grow this for the interesting foliage - the light rose flowers are very secondary.

It grows to about 20 cm. tall.

'Amber Waves' was awarded the 'Best Rare and unususal Plant' by Landscape Ontario for 2000.

Heuchera 'Black Beauty'

'Black Beauty' (a Terra Nova introduction) has stunning very dark (but not black), shiny and ruffled foliage. It grows to 45 cm. tall.

Heuchera 'Cappuccino'.

'Cappuccino' has purple-maroon, wavy foliage which is very sun-resistant. The flowers are typical of Coral Bells, but creamy white in colour. It grows to 40 cm. tall. It prefers well drained, alkaline, organic-enriched soil. The whiteish margins take a couple of years to become prominent.

Heuchera 'Frosty'.

'Frosty' has variegated (cream and green) foliage with brilliant pink flowers. It prefers well drained, alkaline, organic-enriched soil. 'Frosty' grows to 45 cm. tall.

Heuchera 'Raspberry Ice'

Showy pink and dark pink two-toned flowers above eye-catching foliage with a mesh of dark veins over a background of raspberry and frosty silver make an attractive mound shape.Best in partial shade locations. Generally will do well under trees where dry summer shade is a factor.

The plant is 12" high with a 27" spread in 2 years; flower stems 24" tall.

Heuchera 'Silver Lode'

The pink buds turn white at opening on mound-shaped plants with silver matte foliage.

Best in partial shade locations. Generally will do well under trees where dry summer shade is a factor.

The plant is about 12" high with a spread of 20" in 2 years; flower stems 30" to 36" long.

Heuchera 'Strawberry Candy'.

'Strawberry Candy' (a Tera Nova introduction) has foliage which is green marbled with silver. It grows to 45 cm. tall. It is a good container plant.

Heucherella 'Burnished Bronze'

'Burnished Bronze' (a Terra Nova introduction) has large glossy bronze leaves with creamy white flowers. It grows to 20 cm. tall. Plant in part sun in organic-rich, well-drained soil. It needs uniform moisture to thrive.

Heucheralla 'Dayglow Pink'

'Dayglow Pink' (a Terra Nova introduction) has chocolate-coloured leaf veining on green leaves. It grows vigorously to 20 cm. tall and can form a good groundcover in time. It likes alkaline soils, which are well-drained, and part shade to full sun.

Phlox panicaulata 'Becky Towe'

'Becky Towe' is a strong, erect plant with variegated foliage (broad golden margins) and salmon-coloured flowers with a magenta eye. It grows to 75 cm. tall. This phlox is named for 'Becky' - June Towes' dog ... whatever!

Phlox paniculata 'Shortwood'

'Shortwood' has pink flowers, with dark pink eye, in midsummer. This is a clump-forming plant with erect, tall flowering stems.

It prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and site with good air movement. Keep it well-watered and fertilized. Remove spent flowers to promote rebloom and prevent self-seeding, as seedlings are not true-to-type. It is a mildew-resistant variety but may show mildew after its bloom period. If it becomes mildewed, cut back the foliage to groound level ... this will also encourage the plant to increase in size as a response.

'Shortwood' is not short: it grows to 150 cm. tall. It's name comes from a U.S. garden, owned by Stephanie Cohen, called 'Shortwood'.

Polemonium 'Snow and Sapphires'

'Snow and Sapphires' (a Terra Nova introduction) is an improved 'Brise d'Anjou'. The sky-blue floweres are fragrant, but it is the variegated (white margins) foliage which make this plant stand out. It grows to 45 cm. tall. 'Snow and Sapphires' did not 'melt out' (like Brise d'Anjou) in the heat of the summer last year at JEA's Strathroy facilities.

'Snow and Sapphires' prefers growing in part shade but will take full sun upon maturity. This is a challenge to orchestrate!

Primula 'Kate McSparron'

'Kate McSparon' , with its double, sweetly fragrant, yellow flowers is at its best in early spring. It grows to 35 cm. tall. Plant it in part shade in uniformly moist, organic-rich soil.

Sedum 'Purple Emporer'

'Purple Emporer' has one of the darkest purple foliage of the sedum family. It is erect in form and boasts a reddish late summer to fall flower. It grows to 40 cm. tall and has good drought tolerance. Plant in full sum in lean soil to encourage the deepest foliage colour.

Tiarella ' Black Snowflake'

'Black Snowflake' (a Terra Nova introduction) has glossy deeply cut foliage. The leaves are extremely dark when new and matures to a crisp green with a dark centre. The light pink bloom, in April/May tops the 30 cm. tall plant.

This plant was featured in Fine Gardening in March 2001.

Click here for more information, from Terra Nova Nurseries, on the history and uses of Tiarellas.

Tiarella 'Pink Brushes'

'Pink Brushes' (a Blooms of Bressingham introduction) forms a dense mound of maple-leaf-shaped foliage. It is topped by numerous 'brushes' of light pink flowers. The bloom period is quite long - from May through July. Plant it in part shade in humus-rich, moist soil. We have been surprised at how drought-tolerant tiarellas are under our maples.

Tiarella 'Pink Pearls'

'Pink Pearls' (a Blooms of Bressingham introduction) has distinctive maroon veining on shiny green foliage giving it a quilted look. It grows to 35 cm. tall and is capable of forming a decorative ground cover in shaded areas. It needs rich, moist soil in a shady location to thrive. Its starry light pink flowers, showy from midspring extending well into summer, are held well above a compact mound-shaped plant.

Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate'

'Sweet Kate' is a new cultivar offering golden coloured foliage. It will be very useful in container compositions. The deep blue flowers, in late spring/early summer, are themselves a bonus in shaded settings. Tradescantias, named after the plant collector John Tradescant, thrive in wet areas as witnessed by their colonization of roadside ditches in Georgia's Jekyll Island (a favorite haunt of ours!). In shaded areas they will stand drier conditions, but they are not really drought resistant. In midsummer as the foliage becomes unkempt, cut it back to ground level for a renewed fall diplay of foliage and flower. 'Sweet Kate' will grow to 18 - 24 inches tall and will slowly spread to become a ground cover in favourable locations.

Trifolium ' Dragon's Blood'

Now here's a plant that I am not sure about its appeal, but designers may like its variegation for container uses. The catalogue description says that 'Dragon's Blood' has mint green leaves with blood red highlights resembling dragon's scales ... well everyone has an imagination! The thing we agree on is that it is 'unique'.

It'll grow about 5 cm. tall and spread slowly in a dryish garden setting - it will respond with greater vigor with uniform moisture and full sun.

Veronica prostata 'Aztec Gold'

'Aztec Gold' (from Terra Nova) is another plant useful for attaining foliage contrast in a well drained sunny to part shade garden or in containers. It has an upright growth habit holding the bright blue May floweres above its golden foliage. It'll grow 15 cm. tall and is mat forming. Last year customers oggled our 'Trehane' veronica under our weeping crab apple - 'Aztec Gold', growing a bit taller, should appeal even more.

Veronicastrum virginicum 'Appolo'

'Appolo' is a shorter Culver's root, at 90 cm. tall, that has reddish purple flower spikes. It is quite adaptable, growing well in full sun to part shade but liking well-drained moist rather than dry soils. It's late summer to fall bloom fills the late season colour void in gardens.

The End

of this show!

Hope you are eager to get some of our new plants for 2002. The emphasis is on 'some', as we'll be getting others from JEA as well as from other suppliers. Thanks to JEA Perennials' promotional interests, we can give you an early season indroduction to some of their new aquisitions.
