Water Gardening At Reilly's ... As of 2005 we are a NurseryPro pond products dealer
Water gardening has become a new component of our nursery as of 2005. We now have a 16' X 16' tear drop shaped pond with waterfalls and stream as a demonstration pond system. This is an exciting and energizing endeavour - it is nice to have new projects to implement for our own enjoyment and to then be able to provide the experience of having 'walked the talk' when we talk to customers about the products we now sell. Click here to see a photo-essay of our 2004 pond-building stages and the finished project (minus plantings). Plant installation is now mostly completed and photos will soon be included in our photo-essay.
We have become a NureryPro pond products dealer. We stock complete pond kits for DIY installation, replacement pumps, underwater lighting systems, EDPM pond liners, and pond maintenace items. Click here to go to Aquascape's web site where you'll get an amazing amount of information on pond building and seasonal pond maintenance tips.

New products for 2005 - 2006
Our product line continues to expand. We've again ordered organic fertilizers, natural bark mulches, many new containers, plus many new plant varieties.
We also sell a line of organic pest and weed control products. We've been using most of them for years ourselves and can vouch for their effectiveness.
Neem oil - gardeners with Lily Beetle infestations will be interested in this product. Canadian regulations don't allow us to tell you why it is of interest. The label claims it is useful as a leaf shine! Using it will allow your lilies' leaves to really shine ! (Wink, wink, cough, cough!)

Hoeing Just Got Easier - 2005 Update
|
|
|
|
|
|
We have brought in a supply of terrific new garden hoes that are virtually effortless to use.
When Carole and I attended the 2004 Toronto gardening trade show, we saw a demonstration of a uniquely designed wing-shaped hoe called the Winged Weeder. We bought 36 of them because they looked so easy to use. Picture an exaggerated 'arrow head' on a stick or a stealth jet fighter with sleek, pointed and swept-back wings. Place the 'arrow' or wings on a handle and you have a 'Winged Weeder'. All edges (leading and trailing) of the spring steel wings are sharpened for cutting in both push and pull strokes. The design looked great in theory.
In the year that I've stocked these hoes I have become a personal convert to their ease of use and ability to get the hoeing job done.
One of my first tests was to edge some gardens. (See photo below) By rotating the hoe’s handle I had a pointed, 6-inch long cutting tool that easily sheared the roots of invading grasses that were creeping into the beds. Turning the handle so that the cutting head was parallel to the ground let me easily flip the grass clumps out of the soil.
Next was removing some quite mature dandelions. Again, with the hoe’s cutting head positioned so that one wing was angled up in the air while the other was in the soil, it was easy to slice off the dandelion’s root about 6 inches below soil level and then flip the leafy portion of the weed out of the ground.
Removing weeds from between flagstones and bricks (see photo) was equally easy. The pointed end of the cutting ‘wings’ easily negotiates the narrow joints.
It is indeed a well-designed hoe!
If you are interested in purchasing one of these great new hoes give us a call or send an email and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient time for you to visit and see the three sizes of ‘Winged Weeders'. Two are on 52" long rake-like handles there are two head sizes (3 and 6 inch long wings) and the third (sorry, not available in 2005) is the 3-inch head on a 12-inch long handle.
The hoes are priced as follows:
52" handle with 3" cutting wings - $39.95,
52" handle with 6" cutting wings - $41.95.

Once -a-year fertilizing ... consider this procedure for 2006.
We are now selling a ‘feed and forget’ fertilizer that you apply just once in the spring. The balanced nutritional formula (14:14:14) is ideal for hanging baskets, container plantings, and perennial plantings in your gardens.
The nutrients, contained within a unique protective pellet, are slowly released to your plants over the growing season. Increasing seasonal temperatures and warmer rains (or water from your hose system) releases the nutrients to meet the needs of actively growing plants. Chilly spring conditions, on the other hand, retard the rate of nutrient release so that they are conserved until they are really needed. There is just the right amount of fertilizer in the pellets to last a growing season. It’s a great system for busy gardeners or those of us with memory lapse. Gardeners with cottages or travel plans will find this ‘once-a-year’ fertilizer guarantees your plants the food they need for perky growth and flower production for the times when you are around your gardens to enjoy them.
We’ve used this same fertilizer to feed our potted perennials for 6 years with very good results. Last year, participants in Carole’s ‘Container Workshops’ used this same fertilizer to feed their take-home creations. This year, we are making this great fertilizer available to all of our customers at a very reasonable price of $10.89 per kilogram.
Next time you are at our nursery, look for our containers of this great slow-release fertilizer. We hope you like our effort to save you money.
Here are the application instructions:
Lightly mix fertilizer into top 1/2 inch of soil.
Fertilizer application rate per container size:
6 g. per 6" pot;
12 g. per 8" pot;
30 g. per 10" pot;
115 g. per 20" pot;
170 g. per 24" pot;
265 g. per 30" pot.
You can also use this fertilizer in garden applications.
For garden use, apply 1 kg. per 45 sq. feet ( 4.2 sq. meters).
A 20 kg. bag will cover 900 sq. feet ( 83.5 sq. meters).
A 20 kg. bag sells for $159.50 (2006 price to be confirmed soon).

Interested in using our gardens for wedding photography?
Shannon's wedding photographer was so enthusiastic about the range of photo opportunities in the gardens that he asked us if we had ever thought of offering our gardens for bridal pictures or even other weddings.
We are glad to respond that "We are Open for Bookings". There are few gardens in Ottawa's western areas available for wedding photography. We could conceiveably soon have a 'traffic jam' of wedding parties in the gardens and this would not suit anyone. So please make reservations well in advance if this opportunity interests you.
There will be a fee for this service. The reason for a fee is that we will have extra lawn and garden maintenance to undertake to have the property in show conditions to accentuate your memorable moments.
A flat fee has not been set. We will negotiate a fee based on the details of your request.

• Ornamental Grasses Hardy In the Ottawa Area. Phil Reilly
Phil begins his 60 minute slide presentation with a primer on growing and maintaining ornamental grasses. In the slide presentation are many compositional photos of distinct ornamental grass gardens as well as ideas for incorporating grasses in conventional perennial gardens.
• Xeriscaping: Gardening with Plants Suited to Low Water Demands. Phil Reilly
Phil introduces the concept of xeriscaping: gardening with plants tough enough to withstand low moisture conditions. Many plants in high-elevation mountains, in deserts and around salt-water areas have adpted to these very conditions. Garden design and soil preparation, to mimic the natural environmental conditions of these areas, is key to growing these tough plants. Plants with low water demands and growable in Ottawa's temperate environment are discussed.

Work Opportunities at Reilly's Country Gardens
Nursery employment for 2006
Each year we hire part-time and/or full-time workers. Horticultural training is not our primary consideration for employment! We primarily need people with the ability to communicate a love of plants to customers. Of course there is the drudgery of watering, moving plants about as they arrive by the truckload and working outdoors rain or shine.
We'll be looking for a start date of about the second week of April and a wrap-up about mid October. We are quite flexible in arranging hours to be worked. We appreciate regular commitments of blocks of time (e.g. full days but not necessarily consecutive days) and starting and quitting times can be negotiated. We pay experienced plants people a bit above the industry standards to reflect our 'specialty' position in the industry. Contact us if you are interested in more information.
