The ASCII character set is widely supported - almost all computers and typewriters are capable of using it. Therefore, anything represented in ASCII can be transported to almost any computer system, and typed on almost any typewriter. This document describes a standard notation for the transcription of music for the guitar using ASCII text.
Once transcribed in ASCII, the music may then be stored in a database and accessed by users with many different types of computers. The use of a standard notation benefits those reading the transcriptions.
Two methods of transcribing music for the guitar are presented. The first method, chording, is applicable when only the chords that make up the song will be given. The second method, tablature, is more complicated and allows for the transcription of not only chords, but for almost anything that can be played on the guitar. The two methods may be intermingled in the same transcription.
