Nancy C. Schmeing

Though she knows both Spanish and French, Nancy C. Schmeing’s main focus over the past few years has been translating documents from German to her mother tongue, English. She has been translating for three years with a local company specializing in complex technology-related materials. She has also been part of the ProZ/KudoZ family of translators for over a year.

Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, USA, Nancy put most of her efforts towards academics and became a member of the National Honor Society, but still made time for extracurricular activities, such as Spanish Club. She attended the University of South Carolina, and earned a Fulbright scholarship. With that, she trotted across the globe to Germany, where she went to Göttingen University. There, she studied for studied for a year, and met her future husband. Because of this, even after returning to America and attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), she returned to Germany for summers as well as 3 years of work, soaking up the rich culture and language.

Since both were physicists, when career opportunities opened up at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)’s Chalk River Laboratories, the Schmeings moved to nearby Deep River. While Hermann is still working with AECL, Nancy now devotes all of her time and energy to translating.
