Chapter - New friends in old places

Constable Robertson keyed in Paul's name, address, phone, and employer. The education database returned his tax number and a summary of education results.

"Interesting," he thought, "one year at University of Toronto. Flunked out."

Next, he checked that data against the Canadian police records. No arrests, but a reference to Interpol. Hmmm. Would have been more info if it was serious, or red-flagged if he was wanted. That must have been what his sergeant meant when he said he had checked him out, and there was nothing serious. But what had he meant by "Teenage pranks?"

He checked Interpol. One arrest for vandalism. Released next day. Charges dropped. In Bonn, Germany. Deported back to Canada.

25 Neo Nazis desecrated a Jewish cemetery. They were caught by police and on video. Three ringleaders were sentenced to 2 months in jail. A fourth possible ringleader was released with the rest.

Hmmm. Were any of the three currently wanted for anything? No. Hmmm. How about the fourth one? Possible links to "Clean Homeland." Hmmm. Never heard of it. Yellow Flag.

Clean Homeland. Nazi group. One of 30 groups considered after the Antwerp bombing. Then a new group called "Trash removal" claimed responsibility for the bombing. Since it was an unknown group, the others were still yellow flagged as possibly linked.

Hmmm. So Paul's only criminal record is a link to an obscure Nazi group. And he may or may not be connected to skinheads here, and some skinheads are Nazis.

Not much to go on.

"Hi, Robertson."

"Hello, sir."

"What are you doing?"

"Checking up on Paul Burnthaas."

"I already did that."

"Yes, sir. You said he had a teenage prank on his record. Nothing serious."

"And that's what he's got!", the sergeant shouted. "It's not a constable's job to second guess his sergeant! I don't want to see you investigating this guy again! Your job is to go to the schools, stand behind the desk at the mall, and see that all the young kids stay in line! Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir!"

"And leave the investigating to the detectives!"
