"Robertson."

"Yes, Sergeant?"

"I haven't seen your report on those kids yet."

"What kids, sir?"

"The ones you caught at Mrs. Simpson's and Mr. Ellsley's."

"Mrs. Simpson? I gave you a report on the incident in her area, sir."

"You did?"

"It's the report about the prowler in the east end, last week."

"That report wasn't about teenage boys, nor did it mention Mrs. Simpson."

"Yes, sir. Since her house is in the block of houses he was prowling behind, when I tried to cut him off, I ran down her street to do it. And Mrs. Simpson pointed out the prowler to me in the first place, so when I lost him, I dropped in to tell her he was gone. I expect someone saw me, knew the boys were there, and misunderstood."

"Fascinating, what about last night at Mr. Ellsley's?"

"Mr. Ellsley's son and his two friends wanted to report new evidence about young John's mugging. I went over to Mr. Ellsley's house right away to take their statements. You'll get a copy of my report as soon as I finish typing it."

"Hmmm. So the boys aren't in trouble at all?"

"Not with me, sir."

"Robertson, you are a community policeman. Our system may be experimental, but our roles are very clear. Your job is to make the little old ladies feel safe, and keep the neighbourhood kids under control. Mrs. Sternson thinks you're doing a bang-up job in this case. Should I try to tell her you let a prowler get away? Or should I let her think you kept the boys under control for Mrs. Simpson?"

"I haven't had tea with Mrs. Sternson for nearly 2 weeks." Constable Robertson grimaced. "Why don't I drop in on her on Monday?"

"Why don't you do that, Robertson?"
